Question Sw 8.1 & Kde 3.1

Hello !

Is there anyone more but me that has encountered following problem:

After installing KDE 3.1 , the konqueror filebrowser is inpossible to use when running as root.

The problem is that it crashes instantly when trying to open a window.

would be interesting to know why & what to do !

- Oops.
- W-what do you mean, oops?
- Some jerk put this...
- Don't say "oops".
- What do you say we try that again?
- Yes, yes. Yes. Without the "oops". Thataway.

Im the other way around. When logging is as any other user but root, konq crashes as soon as it is run, and the arts sound server wont run. (no permission granted for dev/dsp device)

hmm. . .
This is getting even more weird . .

I think the fault has to do with the new version/reinstalling KDE, because
I had this problem before I was reinstalling Slackware 8.1 (I performed a clean install). I have been using the default KDE that comes with 8.1 , KDE 3.0.1, and everything has worked ok.
When I uppgraded to KDE 3.1 , I first unistalled my KDE 3.0.1 packages and the QT library packages . So this is the second time that the same phenomen
occurs.

I also uninstalled the stock kde version that comes with slack 8.1 just before installing kde 3.1

I was running dropline beforehand, and only had kde there because i forgot to uncheck it when in (re)installed slack a few months ago. I uninstalled QT, arts & all kde related packages, then installed kde 3.1 in the correct order. And here I am with kde 3.1 only useful for the root account

I might uninstall all kde packages & qt etc, remove anything left behind and start again

This is a suggestion I got from another forum:

I had this problem when IconView and Sound Previewing was enabled...
If that's your problem, you can either turn soundpreviewing off or you edit your /opt/kde3/bin/startkde (or whereever your distro puts it) and remove LD_BIND_NOW=true before kdeinit.
LD_BIND_NOW should increase performance, but causes misbehaviour in some cases...
