Things unmentioned so far, but super-fun, imho, and all free, all with slackbuilds:

openttd, supertux2, minetest, hedgewars, tuxpaint, rocksndiamonds, nsnake, scorched3d, lincity-ng.

Too bad violence is not OK, because there we have some of the best games overall: openarena & xonotic. Viva John Carmack

I certainly wouldn't call Hedgewars non-violent. Though it is a fun game indeed.

In that same category as the excellent GCompris there's another suite of educational games called Childsplay:
http://childsplay.sourceforge.net/

Also Tux4Kids has some pretty good educational games -- TuxMath, TuxPaint, and TuxTyping:
https://tux4kids.alioth.debian.org/

Here's a couple of really good astronomy applications, Stellarium and Celestia. Both use different approaches in how they function and both are visually engaging.
http://www.stellarium.org/
http://www.shatters.net/celestia/

KDE already includes some basic but still interesting games too, that are part of its 'KDE Educational Project' -- Kalzium (periodic table of elements), KGeography (geography tutor), Ktouch (typing tutor), KStars (not quite as extensive as Stellarium), and several others.

Yeah I was debating it with myself when writing, but at some point one has to draw the line, right? I think the usual objections are more about graphics than the implied content. For example, millions die is free-civ wars, pinguins fall to their deaths in supertux2, and nsnakes is as bad as the Whacking day, but that's not the point. So I think hedgewars may just qualify as an entry where the cartoony approach makes everything OK.

I'm going to say Cities: Skyline, even though I've never played it.

I second Rigs of Rods, since I do packages for it regularly I imagine playing around with real cars and realistic physics may be fun for kids. And adults, too, of course.

depending on HOW you define "violent"

a 80's throwback to DEFENDER!!!
" word war VI" -- yes word and world

it is a side scrolling arcade shoot them up
but in the 80's style of asteroids and defender

If you go the MAME/MESS/UME route check out games for SNES/Megadrive era stuff. Many of those games are kid friendly. Emulation might not be ideal, but it opens of huge listing up.

Wow. THANK YOU very much for all those numerous suggestions. I have a spare machine to test all this stuff in the days to come.
