Suggestions for non-violent games for kids

Hi,

I just installed Slackware64 14.1 on a friend's laptop. She has two kids, aged 8 and 10. She'd like to have some non-violent games for them.

I admit I'm not a gamer, and I've never been one, so I know next to nothing about computer games. I've searched around a bit, and so far, I installed LBreakout2 and Neverball. Now I'm a bit lost in the games jungle.

Any suggestions for games which kids that age might like?

Cheers,

Niki

My wife really loves Shisen-sho, which is a nice puzzle game. Non-violent and highly addictive. Frozen-bubble in SBo also comes to mind.

SuperTuxKart, a MarioKart clone, just got released with a new game engine.
Of course all the KDE games.
Frozen Bubble.

Games!

The ones that have SlackBuilds ready:
Frozen Bubble http://slackbuilds.org/repository/14...frozen-bubble/
Super Tux http://slackbuilds.org/repository/14.1/games/supertux/
Tux Kart http://slackbuilds.org/repository/14.1/games/tuxkart/
Pingus http://slackbuilds.org/repository/14.1/games/pingus/
Flight Gear http://slackbuilds.org/repository/14...es/FlightGear/
Free Civ http://slackbuilds.org/repository/14.1/games/freeciv/

Now the ones that do not have SlackBuilds ready (meaning you may need to compile them by hand or otherwise get the installer)
Creatures Docking Station http://www.creaturesdockingstation.com/

Do have in mind that you can play games designed for Windows, in Linux, by using Wine or Codeweavers (or even DosBox). Your mileage may vary.

Have fun!

There's already bsd-games in the "y" package set. Very ultra-violent.

World of Goo
Minecraft (I don't like it, but everyone else seems to).

PySolFC - I always install it.
(Basic compendium of games.)

I prefer Aisleriot. It's mysteriously absent from SlackBuilds.org, but I have a package for it in my repos.

My son LOVES playing supertuxkart. Going to try the 0.9 release. I'm sure he'll be excited!

you forgot
Extreme tux racer
http://sourceforge.net/projects/extremetuxracer/
it should already be in MOST distros repos

so use your package manager

Pingus. Not the genuine Lemmings™ that I miss but nice.

Do not forget kturtle (shipped in Slackware) to learn programming.

And of course kmines and kpat.

+1 for Pingus, but I consider it an adult game because I play it! Then again...

ReaperX7 04-23-2015 12:31 PM

You could always try MAME and look for older non-violent games.

Mine likes Rigs of Rods and SimUTrans
