You don't start them. You set the rules with the commands like

iptables -A INPUT -p icmp -j DROP

in the command line or read them from a script.

And once you have your rules you can save and restore them

iptables-save > some_file
iptables-restore < some_file

(though this varies wildly based on distro, on some it would be more like /etc/init.d/iptables save active)

rc.firewall ?

Hello,

I'm relatively new to Slackware, but found information on this subject here:

Cheers,

all the /etc/init.d/iptables script does in fedora is run iptables-restore for you. it is just doing `iptables-restore <options> /etc/sysconfig/iptables` in a script. you could write something like that and stick it in Slackware too.

You might want to setup your machine to dual boot fedora and slackware or put fedora or slackware in a xen-VM on the other. That way you can go back and forth between fedora and slackware at anytime and compare what fedora is doing vs what slackware is doing. You definitely don't have to but seeing something that you are use to and taking it to something new might make it easier. You will have lots of difficulty coping files or .conf files from one to the other but seeing how it is done and then doing it in the other can make things easier at first.
