stumped: /dev/dsp error

When doing anything sound-related, I get this message:

Code:
~$ artsd
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such device)
/dev/dsp exists and is a softlink to /dev/dsp0. I tried changing it to a hardlink, nothing.

What should I do? I have no idea what the problem is!

Thanks for any help....

probably a permissions problem - try doing chmod 666 /dev/dsp as root.

I got this same error after kernel recompile from stock 2.4.26 to 2.4.28-pre2. Turns out I forgot to recompile alsa drivers for my current kernel. After rebuilding alsa, sound was back.
