Strange problem with Firefox

I am running slackware 11.

I have installed firefox-2.0.0.4 from linuxpackages.net.

I am running fluxbox as my window manager.

I have a strange problem with firefox. Suddenly, it stops responding and the window area is not redrawn, it doesn't respond to mouse or keyboard. When I kill it with kill -9, and restart firefox, I get the message box asking whether I want to restore the old session or start a new one. Regardless of what I select, firefox then disappears. I can see in the process list but running on pts/18 or so. I think this is strange.

Any ideas ?

Strange, but not uncommon.

I have seen this behavior with clean installs of Slackware 11.0 and 12.0. I also have seen this with clean installs of various versions of Zenwalk.

When firefox works, it works great. When it freezes, or shuts down, it doesn't work at all.

If you search the forums, you will find several posts that address this issue.

By the way, I have only seen this behavior occur with Mozilla and Seamonkey. I have not seen it with Konqueror.

I read your post about this. But no solution was given in the post. You thread got converted in eye-candy thread for firefox.

Now, for me the solution is to reboot (reminds me of M$)

Any other thing I can do ?

i would remove that linuxpackages.net package and just use the mozilla.org provided firefox. i never had much luck with linuxpackages.net and try to avoid them whenever possible. compile yourself, or use a binary (like the mozilla.org firefox) -- you're much better off, imho.

slackhack -> This also occurs with the firefox version included with slackware 12. As it occurred with the firefox versions included with multiple releases of Zenwalk and the version that was included with slackware 11.

As far as I can tell, either firefox (and other mozilla variants)doesn't want to play nice with slackware (and its variants), or it is broken.

I also always use the mozilla.com's binary. And it always works fine.

Open a terminal and type firefox -safe-mode
Make sure you mark all the checkboxes.

The problem still exists then?
