I have posted in this forum in case the issue below is related to the Slackware package of Firefox.

On my Linux Firefox installation I get a strange behaviour when I download any file from the web.

No matter what kind of file it is (e.g. doc, exe, zip), it always gets saved with an extra extension

e,g, myfile.doc.doc
myfile.zip.zip.

I can obviously rename the file afterwards, but it is annoying and I would like to stop it happening.

Any idea what is causing this?.

I have had the same thing on both Fedora 3 and Fedora 4. I strongly believe that it is an issue with the Firefox download manager, where it confuses file extension and file type into the double extension.

Interesting Konqueror happily opens these double extension without problem, so they are not really a zip archive in a zip archive but just a single archive. I haven't tried this yet, but maybe a download extension that replaces the default one might change this behaviour.

What version of Firefox? You can download the 1.5 version from;

It takes care of some current issues with Firefox.

I am using Slackware 10.2 (actually 'Current - Jan 2006')and the version of Firefox that I am using is the Slackware packaged version 1.5 from the 'Slackware Current' collection. I have had a quick look at the files contained in the package and just from the file timestamps they seem to be the same as in the 'Release' package from the Mozilla download site.

By chance have you check your download actions? Goto Edit >preferences>downloads>View&edit actions button. Check here to see if you have some action related to this issue.

Puzzling!

To add some date, I checked my preferences and the only download actions I have is for .swf files to be opened by Shockwave Flash.
I have found that if I right click a link and "Save link as" and then choose my download directory, then I only get the single extension. However if I left click and let the browser download manager handle it I get a double extension.

I also found on the same file, that if I download to the desktop, that I only get a single extension, but to a directory on a FAT32 partition, I get the double. Maybe the Firefox download manager doesn't handle to well sending file info to a FAT32 drive.

This has explained partly what is happening. I get exactly the same thing.

Now I know to right-click to save the file.
