strange df output

Hi,

I just installed Slackware 11 on an IBM Thinkpad X30. Everything works and seemed ok till I did "df -h". Here's the output:

Code:
bash-3.1$ df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda1 37G 3.6G 31G 11% /
or more detailed
Code:
bash-3.1$ df
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda1 37846348 3759016 32133832 11% /
37 total, 3.6 used, 31 available?????

I did an fsck.ext3 (it's an ext3 fs) and it doesn't find any bad blocks. I've never come across something like that. Any ideas? Or is this something ext3-specific (never used ext3 before)?

don't expect the numbers to add up. The filesystem itself reserves some space, and I'm sure df is not accurate either.

That's funny, I never noticed that:
Code:
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda1 3.8G 3.5G 126M 97% /
/dev/hda6 9.4G 8.7G 234M 98% /mnt/1g
/dev/rd/0 16M 4.1M 12M 27% /mnt/rd0

Mine gives correct numbers:

Code:
bash-3.1$ df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda3 14G 5.0G 9.1G 36% /
/dev/hda4 41G 28G 13G 69% /home
Your HD has some hole on it

Ext3 reserves some space automatically. It can be overriden (tho not recommended) with tune2fs -m
I've it at 0%, but i never fill my HD. Be cautious with it.

By default when an ext2/3 filesystem is created 5% is reserved for root user. This space is supposed to reduce fragmentation as well as allow root to login if the filesystem becomes 100% full. As posted this space does not show up as used and can be changed easily.

Mine too
Code:
/dev/hda2 50G 29G 22G 58% /mnt/wins-d
/dev/hdb2 23G 11G 13G 45% /mnt/wins-f
or not

Here is mine:

Code:
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda1 54G 30G 25G 55% /
30 + 25 = 55 != 54

Just don't fill the partition (especially the root partition)
