Strange cyan-colored vertical line on my screen.

I've got a strange cyan-colored line on my screen. It's just to the right of center, and it comes goes. I see it sometimes when my terminal is maximized (xfce4-terminal) and I saw it on my screensaver. On the screensaver, it ran from top of the screen all the way to the bottom. In this window (seamonkey) I see it on the line that says "Post New Thread". I would really like to be rid of it. My first thought was to look in /var/log/Xorg.0.log. The only thing I saw in there was fbdev:

Code:
root@caitlyn:/etc/rc.d# grep EE /var/log/Xorg.0.log
(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
[303014.642] (EE) Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does not exist, 0)
I wanted to restart X, but there was no /etc/init.d/xdm to restart, nor anything relevant in /etc/rc.d. I still don't know how to manually restart X. I have modprobed fbdev, but I don't really think that that missing is causing this issue. I did add 'modprobe fbdev" to the end of /etc/rc.d/rc.modules.local, so the next time I restart this computer it should load automatically.

Ctrl+Alt+Bksp should restart X. It will at least drop you back to the console where you will have to "startx" again, but if you have any login managers it will bring you back to that.

I did that, but I'm still seeing the fbdev module missing in the Xorg log:

Code:
root@caitlyn:~# grep EE /var/log/Xorg.0.log
(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
[344240.950] (EE) Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does not exist, 0)
root@caitlyn:~# modprobe fbdev
root@caitlyn:~# lsmod | grep fbdev
root@caitlyn:~#
So why isn't my fbdev module being loaded, and why does it not report an error when I try to modprobe it?

The module DOES exist:

Code:
root@caitlyn:/lib/modules/4.4.38# pwd
/lib/modules/4.4.38
root@caitlyn:/lib/modules/4.4.38# find -name fbdev
./kernel/drivers/video/fbdev

I don't know how much more help I can be, but more info might be needed for someone that can. Like. are you running a full install, are you running 14.2 or current, what kind of video is it (Intel/nVidia/etc). As much info that you can that may be relevant.

Hi,

For Xorg modules/drivers check the content of: /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers/

But, I think the fbdev message is pretty harmless since you successfully started X. It could be a hardware related issue; screen or graphic card. Do you have a graphic card or you using only the Intel graphics capabilities?

I did not order a second graphics card put in when I ordered this machine, so I assume that it's only the onboard intel stuff. Good to know that I don't have to worry about the fbdev module...

It's not there:
Code:
root@caitlyn:~# ls /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers/fbdev*
/bin/ls: cannot access '/usr/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers/fbdev*': No such file or directory

it could be your monitor or your video adapter saying
GOOD BY FOR EVER !
try another monitor or that monitor on another computer
I doubt this is a software problem

I don't see the cyan line all the time. Like right now on this page I can only see it bisecting the dark blue rects just above this text box. It's probably the monitor. I was hoping it was something more easily repairable, but I only paid $100 for this monitor, and since I would use it until it died completely, and it's a ton of trouble to fit any other monitor into the space this one is occupying, I'll just assume that the monitor is going bad.

To me this sounds like broken video memory. If you can try another gfx-card to see if things change.

Agreed as well.

I have an old laptop from 2010 which shows similar effects.
