what is the problem your having compiling your own?
does it compile? does it boot?
perhaps fixing the problem by identifying it you can find out more than just trying to find a way around it.
if you wish to take the easy way, (which may not be so easy) there should be a default config file with the kernel source, in slackware, you can just reinstall the kernel headers, cd to the /usr/src/linux-(version) and do make config xconfig or menuconfig, and it will use a default configuration..
