stderr is not a valid tty

am on slack9.1. When i get a log-on prompt after boot, i put in my credentials but my session suddenly ends with the following error (dialog box)

Stderr is not a valid tty:
/etc/X11/gdm/Xsession: where are you.

When i check the Xsession script there is nothing on configuring tty's?

Please help.

Eric

I have a question to you. After boot are you running *dm (seems like gdm here) or you get text screen with login prompt? If you actually get text prompt are you able to run X after you login?

am running gdm. X is already running and i get a graphical login prompt, but after i put my credentials and say OK, i then get a dialog with the error message which also tells me to try login in failsafe mode and try to resolve the problem.

I can go to failsafe mode, but i don't know what to correct.

i never actually used any *dm. so what i'm saying is very general. yes there is nothing about tty in the Xsession. the man-page is really short. at the moment i wonder what does your $HOME/.xsession-errors contain (if anything)
