I just setup a slackware 10.1 machine. I am a complete newb to linux. I run a SmoothWall firewall with DHCP and a Cisco PIX 501. I can access the internet (web browser, ping, etc...) when I use DHCP. When I use static with either the SmoothWall or the PIX I can access anything on the network, but can't get out. Is there something I'm doing wrong with setting up my gateway? That's the only thing I can think of.
As long as the gateway is on the same network and same mask, you should be O.K. You may have to manually configure DNS settings with DHCP. Have a look to see what you have in your /etc/resolv.conf file. You can (as root) add your DNS IP addresses there.
My name resolution is functioning, I have a local DNS server. I can resolve google to 72.14.203.99, but the packets don't make it out of the network. It seems like the SmoothWall is treating me as an external system.
I did specify the SmoothWall as my gateway, that is what is so confusing. Is it possible that the netconfig utility isn't properly configuring my gateway?
I also tried the PIX as my gateway and that didn't work either. I have several servers and workstations setup static, and I setup the SmoothWall myself so I know that static works on this network.
I had a similar problem when I installed slackware 10.2 a few days back. When I ran the route command as root it didnt show my gateway even though I added it during netconfig. I ran:
route add default gw 192.168.1.1
and it solved my problem. if you dont see your gateway when running route then try the above command (the IP being your gateway of course)
