I think I have the latest kernel, since I've installed the latest full version of slackware within the last couple months.

Your suggestion to update the kernel sounds good in principle, but I have a lot of learning to do before I can do that. I'm very much a newbie.

Just to satisfy my curiosity, and to keep in mind for later, what language are the kernels written in?

linux is written in "gcc-flavoured"(*) C, and some assembly code for really low-level platform stuff.

(*) see for example here: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/li...y/l-gcc-hacks/

None of these suggestions work. Any other ideas? I still can't locate ~/.xsession-errors.

When this problem occurs, I can never get to .xsession-errors, since the problem causes the system to freeze until I mannually reboot (using the shut-down switch on my tower). My understanding is that .xsession-errors is cleared when you reboot. Help, this is frustrating!

No it isn't (afaik) ... but it's possible there is nothing going to stderr in userspace when the real cause is a kernelspace crash. Did you check /var/log/kern.log (or wherever the kernel messages are logged to on your system) for traces of a kernel crash?

How do I determine where the kernel messages are logged to on my system?

/var/log/debug
/var/log/syslog
/var/log/messages
/var/log/Xorg.0.log

Those should contain anything you'd want to look at.

In my system, klogd logs to /var/log/kern.log (debian testing). Just take a look at your /var/log directory, if there isn't anything especially for the kernel, you should at least find the kernel messages among other stuff in "messages" or "syslog".

Hi all. The problem finally recurred, and this is the output when I try to run startx (with xfce as the default) as the non-root user and it fails:

Code:
Agent pid 3146
_IceTransSocketUNIXCreateListener: ...SocketCreateListener() failed
_IceTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: server already running
xfce4-session: Unable to establish ICE listeners: Cannot establish any
listening sockets
Agent pid 3146 killed

waiting for X server to shut down xscreensaver: 09:39:51: SIGHUP
received: restarting...

(1165/43)
xscreensaver: 09:39:51: running as barth/root (1165/0)

xscreensaver: 09:39:51: Errors at startup are usually authorization
problems.
But you're not logging in as root (good!) so something
else must be wrong. Did you read the manual and the FAQ?

Any clues as to the kind of failure and why my system fails? Help is much appreciated.

btw, I wasn't ignoring recommendations to look at this logfile. Earlier in this thread, Zirias stated that it appeared fine.
