startx error: vesa(0) unknown reason for exception

Ooookay. I installed slack 9.1 and tried to run startx. On the occasions in which I can get it to run (oddly, the shell can't find startx - and some other commands, also - if I've su'ed to another user...), I get some (related?) errors...

All this is on a dell inspiron 2500. What follows is some info on my video card:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corp. 82815 CGC [Chipset Graphics Controller] (rev 11)
(prog-if 00 [VGA])

Subsystem: Dell Computer Corporation: Unknown device 00c9
Flags: bus master, 66Mhz, medium devsel, latency 0, IRQ 10
Memory at f8000000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=64M]
Memory at f4000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=512K\
Capabilities: [dc] Power Management version 2

And now for the errors.
(EE) VESA(0): unknown reason for exception
(EE) VESA(0): cannot continue
***two more repetitions of this***
(EE) VESA(0): Set VBE Mode failed!

Fatal screen server error:
AddScreen/ScreenInit failed for driver 0

***some info about the log file***

XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (0 known processes) with 0 events remaining.

Thanks! I've been searching various forums for info on this, but I know very, very little about configuring hardware, and don't know enough yet to readily adapt information that doesn't quite apply to my situation. There's plenty of information on startx errors out there, I just don't know how to use it :-/

Hmm...I suppose this thread probably would have been more appropriate in laptops or hardware. Sorry!
