Startup order for Postfix, Dovecot and Postgrey?

My Slackware64 multi-domain mail server is running fine now, with Postfix, Dovecot and Postgrey.

One final thing to do is add these services to rc.local, so I don't forget to launch them in case of a (rare) server reboot.

The question might be of no importance, but here goes: is there any orthodox startup order for these three services?

Cheers,

Niki

I would start postgrey, postfix and dovecot in that order. Postgrey first because if you receive an email during startup, postgrey should be ready to accept or reject it as it is your first line of defense. If you start postfix first and receive an email while postgrey is not up and running, you'll get an error in postfix logs about it.

Dovecot should be last, in my opinion, since it is usually used for local delivery (postfix to dovecot-lda) and imap mail access.

I use Policyd2 (pretty much what Postgrey does), Postfix and Dovecot and that is the order I use. Never had any issues.

Hope that helps.
