starting kde over SSH

Hello (and thanks for any help - ahead of time!)

I currently use the following script (using cygwin on windows) to log into KDE over SSH to a Fedora Core 2 box...that works fine but does NOT work on Slackware 10.

-----------------------------------------------------------

#!/bin/bash
export PATH=/usr/X11R6/bin:$PATH
export DISPLAY=$HOSTNAME:0.0
cd $HOME
rm -rf /tmp/.X11-unix
XWin -fullscreen 1>/dev/null 2>/dev/null &
ssh -l $2 -X $1 startkde -o compression=no

------------------------------------------------------------

When I run it trying to log into my Slackware 10 box I get the following error

-----------------------------------------------------------
xset: bad font path element (#58), possible causes are:
Directory does not exist or has wrong permissions
Directory missing fonts.dir
Incorrect font server address or syntax
/usr/bin/startkde: line 130: lnusertemp: command not found
/usr/bin/startkde: line 134: lnusertemp: command not found
/usr/bin/startkde: line 138: lnusertemp: command not found
/usr/bin/startkde: line 141: dcopserver_shutdown: command not found
startkde: Starting up...
/usr/bin/startkde: line 146: kreadconfig: command not found
/usr/bin/startkde: line 162: ksplash: command not found
/usr/bin/startkde: line 166: kdeinit: command not found
startkde: Could not start kdeinit. Check your installation.
/usr/bin/startkde: line 183: kwrapper: command not found
startkde: Shutting down...
/usr/bin/startkde: line 193: kdeinit_shutdown: command not found
/usr/bin/startkde: line 194: dcopserver_shutdown: command not found
/usr/bin/startkde: line 195: artsshell: command not found
startkde: Running shutdown scripts...
/usr/bin/startkde: line 1: kde-config: command not found
startkde: Done.

-------------------------------------------------------------

This is a standard slackware 10 box with security bug fixes only. It was a fresh install.

Is there something wrong with the way the Slackware Packages are installed that the above does not work?

thanks!

-Doug

Try
Code:
export PATH=/usr/X11R6/bin:/opt/kde/bin:$PATH

Nope. Still get the same error.

I wonder why the variables are not getting exported? Could this be a problem with SSH configuration?

thanks

Actually I think that the correct path to KDE binaries should be set in your host machine, try modfing the PATH variable in /etc/profile

Just did that...still same error.

For the PATH variable to not be inherited is WEIRD since the export command is being used.

Ok. Fixed it. But I had to modify the PATH variable in the startkde script!!!! WTF!!!

Somebody explain this to me. It's as if somebody told me the law of gravity does not apply in all situations!

When you modified the profile script, did you make it in the same machine that has startkde script? It makes sense because the account where you're executing KDE has to have that var set.
