Put exec <whatever> & in a file called .xinitrc in your home directory.

If you use the startx command, add a line like this into ~/.xinitrc:
exec <your program> &

If you log in using x/k/gdm, add a line like this into ~/.xprofile
exec <your program> &

Remember that you have to run 'chmod +x' on .xinitrc and .xprofile

If you for example want to be able to change the font behavior of gnome apps in kde, blackbox, windowmaker etc just add the line
exec /usr/bin/gnome-settings-daemon&

You can then change your gnome fonts by running the 'gnome-font-properties' command.

what method are you using to start X?
Through kdm/gdm?

Anyway, try renaming ..xinitrc to .xsession ;)
