splashscreens and display managers

I'm trying to make my Slackware 11 laptop look spiffy. What is the correct way to intall and setup bootsplash? Also, where can I find bootsplash and Lilo splash screens?
On another note, i'm also looking for a light weight display manager. I am not too interested in GDM, KDM, or XDM.
OK, thanks! I'll go try googling some more.

for boot splash u need to recompile the kernel, u can make the lilo graphical (go to shilo,s guide fisrt thread of slackware forum,, sticky) if u want a nice kernel please dont use bootsplash and i think the tux is more good lookin.

did u mean! " gnome and kde " i think the light weight desktop, suited for slack is xfce. GDM, KDM, or XDM. are login managers (login logout, shutdown screen)

Doesn't that depend on how your kernel is configured? When I've changed by bootsplash all I've had to do was recreate the initrd. Granted this was in SuSE, not Slackware.

If you want something light.

login manager: XDM
window manager: XFCE

and don't use a bootsplash :-)

It will work fine on an old PIII with 256Mo RAM

Display managers are used to login and select the windows manager, I think. I guess I wont use the bootsplash, but im still looking for some alternative display managers to the ones I have listed above. I remember I found a really nice and simpe one with the FreeBSD ports, but I don't remember the name.

Exactly, SuSE has the kernel patched already for bootsplash, Slackware doesn't. AFAIK, you are going to have to use 2.6.15 and patch it yourself. You can get the bootsplash utility from http://www.linuxpackages.net/search_...plash&ver=10.2
A good place to start would be bootsplash.org. They have a lot of stuff there.

Im trying to decide whether or not I should use this patch on bootsplash's website. Im running the 2.6.18 kernel. Any reason why it would be unsafe?

hosler,

Regarding the display manager, I found wdm in FreeBSD ports:

http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/url.cgi?p.../wdm/pkg-descr

It's based on XDM.

Maybe that's what you were looking for.

if you search a session manager, slim is maybe what you want. http://slim.berlios.de/

I've applied the 2.6.15 patch to a 2.6.17 kernel on a debian system before and that worked fine. I haven't tried it with 2.6.18, but only one way to find out:)

Here's my build of wdm, which I really like.

You'll find the sources and some extras stuff here:

How can I get WDM to login to xfce? xfce4 requires a set up scripts to load. Can I just configure WDM to just use the xinitrc file?

See here for a greatly improved version which should detect your XFCE and others.
Uninstall existing version first.

You can give Fluxbox a whirl, if you can't get any of the lightweight windowmanagers to go...it comes with the basic Slackware install and here are some screenshots
