Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

i've been compiling and recompiling a 2.4.21 kernel for my computer for ~2 weeks and i'm really confused on some basic issues. by using a modified "guess and check" method of problem solving i've figured out what drivers i need for my sound card, ethernet and cd drives, but my more basic (and important) pieces of hardware are something of a mystery to me.
the GUI has been running much more slowly under the 2.4.21 kernels i've compiled than they do under the stock "bare.i" kernel for slack9. the way i see it, the computer should NOT run slower under a new kernel (esp. when i leave out a whole bunch of options).
for my hardware, i have a voodoo3 video card and a tyan s2466 mobo w/ 2 athlon 2200 mps.
my video card and processor specs seem to give me all sorts of problems. i don't have a very good idea of what options to compile into the kernel to specialize to my chip/mobo architecture, and the same goes for the video card and display options. it is this that i blame for the decreased performance that was mentioned above. for the sake of completeness, i'll list the relevant portions of my kernel config file:

any suggestions for things i should change to get better performance?
additional question: how does the bzImage size of a kernel affect the way the computer runs? i would assume smaller kernel => quicker kernel...
the part of my system that gets slow is the GUI (i like pretty colors, so i run kde 3.1). before i made some fixes it was running real choppy (moving windows around was ugly).
i think i've fixed the issues i had previously by taking the config file for the bare.i kernel and modifying the portions that didn't have to do w/ video cards or frame buffers. i think i now have a kernel that works fine and is specialized to my architechture.
that said, i'm somewhat confused about video/GUI performance under linux. what's the deal w/ all the frame buffer options? how do i pick the right ones for my machine?
