Soundcard - more than 1 sound

Hello people! The question that I will make now can be a nb question, but...well I have the following soundcard:

SoundMAX 4 XL with AudioESP audio subsystem using the Analog Devices AD1985 codec

I wonder if it is possible to configure it to play more than 1 sound at the same time without having "device busy" errors. I have left Windows XP some days ago and I remember that I could hear the new message's icq sounds while listening a mp3 file. I would like to know if it is also possible in Linux, and how.

Thanks for the attention!

Using: Slackware 10.0
