sound with au8820

have an old turtle beach montego (au8820 driver) that worked with MDK9 so i know that the dang thing works. i am fresh with slack (so fresh that i only have TWM installed so far. i compiling and installing everything that i want from scratch basicly (this is starting to hurt *ouch*). now with the sound driver it places the driver here:
Code:

/lib/modules/2.4.20/drivers/sound/au8820.o
i have followed the readme to the t (just like i did for MDK) and there is no sound. i have installed xmms and ran it from cli and, well first i get a popup that says
Code:

check
        1. You have the correct output plugin selected
        2. No other programs is blocking the soundcard (*no that is not my typo that is verbatum)
        3. Your soundcard is configured properly

the output from cli gives this
Code:

** WARNING **: oss_open(): failed to open audio device (/dev/dsp):No such device
i am at a loss here guys/gals. anyone got a suggestion??? i don't even know what my options are as far as programs/config apps are du to the fact that i am using TWM and the menu sucks.

This is the SourceForge Aureal driver we are talking about, right? It sounds like the driver is not being loaded. Have you tried loading the driver manually with modprobe and testing it that way? It would help narrow down where the problem is.

yes it is the sourceforge aureal driver. i have not tried to add it with modprob yet. i will give it a try and let you know
