Sound recording

My sound card works fine with RealPlayer and XMMS on web radio, but when I try to record sound fed from my minidisc player to the line input of the card via device /dev/dsp using "brec" or "gramofile" all I get is empty files except for the header. Device /dev/dsp is linked to /dev/dsp0 which has permissions set to 666.

Anybody have any ideas?

Have you tried activating the capture source in alsamixer, or some other gui interface to the settings?

Yes I tried raising all of the controls in alsamixer but they only affected the output sound levels. I also tried Kmix.
