Have you rebooted after installing alsa?
Do you get any 'fatal: xxx module not found' errors for alsa at startup?

You could try see if there are specific instructions for installing alsa with your sound card - I had this problem for my sound blaster 16 but a search for 'alsa sb16' on google came up with instuctions, and its worked fine since

having similar problem. recent fresh install of Slack 10.2 upgraded to kernel 2.6.13.4, but when I run alsaconf it tells me I have no sound card installed. I'm on a box with onboard sound, and I compiled what should have been the appropriate drivers into the kernel

the sound chip is a VIA VT8233/8235/8237 series ac97 chip.

the following text sections were taken from the dmesg.

the first from somewhere in the middle:

Linux telephony interface: v1.00
Via 686a/8233/8235 audio driver 1.9.1-ac4-2.5
ACPI: PCI Interrupt Link [ALKC] BIOS reported IRQ 0, using IRQ 22
ACPI: PCI Interrupt Link [ALKC] enabled at IRQ 22
ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:00:11.5[C] -> Link [ALKC] -> GSI 22 (level, low) -> IRQ 20
PCI: Via IRQ fixup for 0000:00:11.5, from 255 to 4
via82cxxx: Six channel audio available
PCI: Setting latency timer of device 0000:00:11.5 to 64
ac97_codec: AC97 Audio codec, id: ALG64 (Unknown)
via82cxxx: board #1 at 0xEC00, IRQ 20
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.10rc1 (Mon Sep 12 08:13:09 2005 UTC).
can't register device seq
unable to register OSS PCM device 0:0
unable to register OSS mixer device 0:0
ALSA device list:
#0: Dummy 1
#1: Virtual MIDI Card 1
input: AT Translated Set 2 keyboard on isa0060/serio0

and then the following lines from the end.

via_audio: ignoring drain playback error -11
via_audio: ignoring drain playback error -11
via_audio: ignoring drain playback error -11
via_audio: ignoring drain playback error -11
via_audio: ignoring drain playback error -11
via_audio: ignoring drain playback error -11
via_audio: ignoring drain playback error -11

I can get simple stereo sound in KDE by using OSS, but I can't get midi. I would like to get ALSA running. I have not updated ALSA since installing Slack with the 2.4 kenel

any help would be greatly appreciated.

You must reinstall Alsa after recompiling kernel. And check when compiling kernel that only 'sound support' is yes, dont make for support for alsa or oss in kernel.
