I am not really sure where to start with this one. I have un-muted my setting with alsamixer and saved the settings. I just can't get any sounds to emit from kde.
This is a fresh install of slack 9.1 on a Compaq 2715 laptop (bless those slack guys who included an acpi kernel!! I now have battery stats, thermal zones, speed step, etc!!).
All those (snd) modules are ALSA modules, the "OSS" modules are probably the ALSA OSS emulation modules. If you've unmuted the sound channels in alsamixer then everything *should* be working. Try bugging out of X and using a command line player like amp, mpg123 or even aplay (for wav files) to see if sound actually works.
Well it plays an audio cd just fine. But I through in a disk with some mp3's and opened them in mpg321. I also opened alsamixer to see if I had forgotten something. Then if I un-muted PCM my mp3 would be heard. The sound is total garbage when compared to playing an audio CD. I must have borked a setting somewhere when trying to get sound.
It's a bit wierd in Slackware 9.1 with KDE. I set and saved the ALSA volumes, but I also had to run kmix to turn up and save volumes in KDE. I also turned off the arts sound system (control center, sound and multimedia) as I find it causes some issues with sound fidelity and/or conflicts. I use xmms to play mp3, but I use the OSS output driver instead of the ALSA output driver as I hear a noticeable difference in the sound quality.
I love KDE, but there are some things I don't like about it: arts and kdm. gdm (from gnome) is better imho.
