Sound problems

Hey all,

Just got my box up and running with slack 10.1..... everything was working great as root but when I created a user and logged in as them my sound quit working... I have scanned the forums looking for a solution to this and the only thing I found and tried to no avail was in Shilo's guide. (I typed in this as root "chmod 666 /dev/dsp*" "chmod 666 /dev/mixer*") Still don't have sound as a normal user.. although when I first start my x session It does play 2 seconds of the startup sound before cutting all sound off...

One thing I noticed this time too is that I only have sound as root if I go into alsamixer every time I boot up and turn off the muting.... I assume there is a command to get the mixer to store your last config? Anyway, help would be greatly appreciated at this point.

K guys.. think I found the problem but don't know how to fix it....

I did a ls -la /dev/dsp and /dev/mixer and both of those show up as root being the group owner. If I make my user a member of root I have audio.. but that is the same as running as the root user right?.. So how to I change the group ownership of /dev/dsp and /dev/mixer to audio?

Thanks in advance.

** Edit **

Alright.. I figured out how to change group ownerships and did so on the following

/dev/dsp
/dev/mixer
/dev/audio

Changed the ownership to audio then made myself a member of the audio group and still the same thing.. I have audio when I am root user.. but when I am normal user I have audio just for the startup (loading x) screen of my x session then when the desktop appears my audio no longer works....

Have you tried playing an audio file while in the console, logged in as a normal user? You say that you hear sound briefly for part of the x startup, and I would gather that if you can hear audio while in the console, the problem is with X or permission in X. It's strange that you would hear partial sound though, the problem might be during whatever stage of loadup is taking place, when the sound cuts out.

Wish I had more ideas, but I'm a noob too. =)
