a2carat,

We need a little more information:

-Are you sure that sound only works within KDE?
Meaning:
-How do you know that that is the case?
-What are you using, outside of KDE, to test for sound?
-For instance, does sound work in Gnome? (Have you tried?)
-Or in XFCE (Have you tried?)
-etc.?

-Is this a clean install of Slackware 9.1?
-Or an upgrade of an earlier version?

-Are you using ALSA sound?
-Or OSS?
-How do you know for sure?

In general, the more information the better, especially with sound issues.

-Give us a detailed walk through of what you have tried, and the results for each step, so far:

Im sorry I forget to put my detais on

I have alsa, kernel 2.6.5 it was the same since I upgraded to 2.6.3
when I boot into linux if I start xfce first or gnome, anything other than kde I get no sound . xmms acts like if playing but nothing its coming out. while xmms is running on xfce I start kde, the sound all of a sudden starts to play.

I going to upgrade alsa shortly Im gonna see if that helps

TIA

Did you run alsamixer and make doubly sure that all volume levels are set to high?

Also, just to eliminate the obvious mistakes, the modules are actually loaded, right? As well as the appropriate lines have been put into modules/modprobe.conf?

You guess? Why don't you check? You would have saved yourself the time in replying seeing as you'll have to do so at least once more now.

The only thing that happens different in terms of sound when you start KDE rather than XFce is that under KDE aRTs, the KDE sound server, starts, and under XFce it doesn't.

So this sounds to me like XMMS is set to use the arts output plugin. Please open XMMS and right-click on the window to get the menu, and go to Options=>Preferences=>Audio I/O tab. What output plugin is being used? If arts, change it to OSS or ALSA and see if that helps.

Good luck.
