Sound muted at boot, ntpd.conf rewritten

Since I have moved to 2.6.10, my machine's sound is muted each time it boots. It doesn't take too much to run alsa mixer and turn it up, but I would rather not. Why does this happen?

I am not sure if this is related, but also when my machine restarts, my ntpd.conf file is rewritten. Why is this, and how can I fix it?

after running alsamixer
do 'alsactl store' 'alsactl restore'
to force the settings to save

make sure dhcpcd is using the '- N' flag
