Angry sound is doing my nut (alsa)

I've sucessfully got sound but no way of controlling the volume for some reason. I have alsa compiled into the kernel but alsa makes no difference to the volume. Xine is just about the only program that has sound but that is either at 100% or off, there's no in between.

alsa sucessfully shows my soundcard when I run alsamixer (SiS7012) but if I run alsaconf it says it can't find any pci sound cards

lspci shows the soundcard up fine

Any ideas?
