sound error

Every time I boot Linux and the sound is required, I get a repeated error-artsmessage that says "sound server fatal error: cpu overload, aborting". Of course, this is accompanied by no sound. I am brand new to Linux and trying to figure this out. Any ideas how to fix this problem would be appreciated.

I am using:

AMD Athon XP 1700+
256 mb ram
VIA82xx AC97 audio
Slackware 11
Kernel Linux darkstar 2.4.33.3

I have gone through alsaconf and alsamixer to no avail.

You may have the wrong server selected for aRTS. So go to the KDE Control Center > Sound and Multimedia > Sound System > Hardware tab. Be sure to choose ALSA (abbr) from the drop down list of audio devices. The default setting is 'Autodetect' and this may be the problem.

Also you need to make sure your user has group audio added to him. If sound works as root this is most likely the cause.
