sound doesn't work on slackware 9.1

Hi,

I'm having a problem with my sound as any program that tries to use the soundcard just won't work. What's worse is that no error messages pop-up, they just sort of "hang". Also, I don't know if this is related, but I don't seem to be able to mount any cds/dvds on my system anymore. When I try to mount either, I get this message:
/dev/sr0: Input/output error
mount: you must specify the filesystem type

In fstab, I've already defined the fs type to be auto and it has worked flawlessly for the past 1-2months until today. As for the sound problem, as I said, I don't get any error messages, I've just narrowed it down to the sound. Everything, including my sound was working fine earlier today but after I shut down my system and booted it back up several hours later, all hell broke loose. Any idea's as to what's going on?

Thanks,
deveraux83

PS: using 2.4.22 kernel (came with slack 9.1)

Have you taken a look at /var/log/messages and /var/log/syslog to see if fstab are the appropriate drivers are loading on boot-up? A lot of times those two files will give you clues as to what is happening during boot-up. It might help to post the relevant portion of each of those files here.

Thanks Tino, I would through /var/log/messages and /var/log/syslog thoroughly to check for differences between when everything was working and now but found nothing substantial. One error did stick out tho:
modprobe: can't locate module "snd-card-1"
modprobe: can't locate module "snd-card-2"
there were a few more errors like this one but the were also there before the problem occured so I doubt that this is the cause. Anyway, thanks for trying to help me out. I'll probably just reformat my slackware partition and reinstall it. Can't seem to figure out the problem.
