Sound Card (YAMAHA SB16/PRO COMPATIBLE) HELP!
what's the easiest way to get it to work? everything online that i find is so complicated, can someone tell me where i can get drivers, and explain how to install them?
i also have an OpTi16 Sound Card (ISA PnP) in my pc, if anyone can find something for that, i'm on Slackware 8.1.
Well, you can try to load the module with modprobe ymfpci, and see if that works. But you may need to build the module if it's not already there. If so, you'll need to recompile the kernel and build/install the modules. There is a good how to guide at the top of this forum that will help you get going.
When you are in menuconfig, you'll find the needed support for the Yamaha cards (I think it's YMF7xx or something...I'll double check when I get home) under the SOUND section. Add support as a module (M)...you may need to add OSS also...as a module (M).

if the modprobe ymfpci worked, then your soundcard
might have started working then. you can go
try to play an mp3 or something, or try to open a
mixer app like kmix and see if it opens.

make sure you can't raise the volume knob up.
if it sticks at the bottom, it's not going to play.
you may need a few other modules loaded,
like the oss sound modules, and the oss-mixer,
or you may need some special settings in modules.conf.
i would do some searching on here and google to
see what other people had to do to get that card working.
i'm sorry i don't really know what else to tell you, but
i think you can get it working with some work and
searching.
Um...if I remember correctly, AC97 module needs to be loaded also...I forget the name. Also...are you trying to get sound in X? Did you restart X? I seem to remember having to do this, but I am not 100% sure.
