Sound and Permissions working on reinstall???

perplexed.

I had a heck of a time getting sound to work on a new slackware 10 install until I edited fstab and permissions, as well as configring alsa and saving mixer settings in kde. Real Player was the second hurdle and would only play in root. KDE as root would totally freeze on exit. I had all this with and without Nvidia drivers.

Now I decided to reinstall Slackware 10 to show a friend how to do it. I have my data backed-up in windows. Sound works right-off and no freeze in root. The only thing I changed was the default font on installation.
Any idea what this could be all about? I hope I don't have a hardware problem.
My guess is that probably bios changed somehow accidentally on my part. Maybe plug and play I think needs to be disabled before an install. Can't be the change in fonts can it?

thanks for the help.

sometimes, not always, but sometimes a package can get installed halfway...........or a sharedlib file get hosed.........or the glibc libraries come up half empty..........so a re-install of the OS or use pkgtool and re-install directory "L" and/or "N" on the disk will solve some problems...........
