Sound and ATI Mobile

I installed Slackware 10 on my Thinkpad R32 and I'm having some minor issues. First off and a lot more important then the other issue is the sound. Out of the box I have no sound which is odd because most people I hear have no issues. I've searched a linux laptop sites for advice on the thinkpad and sound and all the modules they told me to run just didn't work. Any advice would help.

Second and no where near as important is that I can't get the linux display drivers by ATI to work. When I configure it with fglrxconfig it goes through the process and I get output that it can't detect my video card on the bus. Its running an 16 MB ATI Mobile card. This isn't a huge deal because I don't use direct rendering except for screensavers and a few other small applications but it would still be nice if someone could offer a little advice.

If you bring up a console and type in alsaconfig.
What happens?

by alsaconfig I think you mean alsaconf because that is the only command available. I ran that command and it went throught the configuration process. It knows the name of the device but still there is no output after its done. I adjusted the mixer settings to make sure the audio level is high enough and I made sure that the hardware wasn't muted on the laptop but still nothing.

Did you restart your laptop after you ran alsaconf (yes that's the command I meant)?
I'm sure is an easier way than restarting, but I don't know it. As you can see, I'm a newb.

Ya I restarted thats not the issue.

I solved the problem by blacklisting a driver which was recommended in another post so that makes me incredibly happy.

If anyone has any advice about ATI Mobile Diplay Cards on Laptops and how to get direct rendering please let me know but I will most likely be finding by searching the web.
