Something went wrong in upgrade to 2.6.10

Before I attempted to upgrade I was at the standard Slackware 10.1, 2.4.29 kernel.
I followed this guide: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...icle&artid=408
word for word, and did everything like the guide says.
Then I reboot slack, all seems to be going well. I get to the login prompt. Login. Next, I attempt to start X. And I get error that says that it can't find the nvidia kernel module, it fails to load. And then spurts out a line about /dev/null Permission denied. (Sorry I don't have the log file.. I can go back to 2.6.10 and run startx and get the log if need be.)
So figuring that since I just installed a new kernel, I thought I might have to reinstall my NVIDIA driver. No problem I say. sh NVIDIA-blahblah.. Was the 7664 pakage if you need to know. And I get this. =/

Now, this isn't the only thing that seems to be broken. alsa sound is broken too, fbsetbg is also broken. Those are just the things I've tried so far. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? I'd really hate to have to reinstall Linux for something like this.

you should know enough your software to compile successfully a kernel so you don't make mistakes if some options are forgotten by make oldconfig or anything like that assuming you are not doing make menuconfig...

Usually few people succeed at the first try...
