socket buffer TCP

Hello,
I'm going to use NetPerf: a tool that measure bulk data transfer performance. I would like to set the TCP socket buffer. There is an option that allow me to do this, but when I use it the socket buffer value doesn't change? why?
Where can I see the default TCP socket buffer used by my O.S.? Thanks...lucs
