Slackware64 -current-ISO

Hi,

I use;
Quote:

Slackware®: -current <- 'You can use Alien_Bob's-script -mirror-slackware-current.sh <- To download -current, create cdrom/dvd Or Alien_Bob's-script -mirror-slackware-current.sh <- UK backup of script script to download the '-current' of choice ( 'x86' meaning 32bit or 'x86_64' meaning 64bit). + You can either pass parameters or edit the script to create the 'ISO' medium of choice. + Plus select a mirror to use. Or create a 'mirror-slackware-current.conf' by passing '-w' to the mirror-slackware-current.sh, the .conf file will be created in the same directory as the script file. You can edit 'mirror-slackware-current.conf' to suit your needs since the file is well documented. The script mirror-slackware-current.sh is well documented to allow you choices if you desire this route. + Alien_Bob is a Slackware® contributor and has graciously provided the scripts/tools. So an ata-boy and a big Thank You to Alien_Bob. :)
From -current changelog
So that I can create my ISO and a local tree for my Slackware64 -current usage. You can use http://bear.alienbase.nl/mirrors/sla...ni-install.iso to do a network install. Be sure to check the md5sum by using http://bear.alienbase.nl/mirrors/sla...ent-iso/MD5SUM

If you do not wish to use the above scripts to get the ISO then you can download Eric's install ISO; http://bear.alienbase.nl/mirrors/sla...nstall-dvd.iso
Be sure to check the md5sum using; http://bear.alienbase.nl/mirrors/sla...ent-iso/MD5SUM

It is convenient for me to have a local mirror tree and getting the ISO via the Alien_Bob's-script -mirror-slackware-current.sh and using the configure file; 'mirror-slackware-current.conf' to control things. If you want to configure to create the mini then change the 'mirror-slackware-current.conf' setting;
Quote:

# Set ISO="DVD" if you want a single DVD instead of three CD ISO's.
# Set ISO="CDROM" if you want three CD ISO's instead of a single DVD.
# Set ISO="MINI" if you want only the mini ISO (network installer).
# Set ISO="ALL" if you want three CD ISO's as well as a single DVD ISO.
# You can set the ISO variable using the '-o <iso_type>' switch too.
#ISO="CDROM"

ISO="DVD"
As always Eric documents his scripts very well and provide the user with information to easily make changes. So I encourage you to use Eric's scripts to create the Local mirror tree and whichever ISO you need or desire to make your Slackware64 -current experience easy & enjoyable.

BTW, 'mirror-slackware-current.sh' does create a md5sum for each ISO so you can check to confirm a valid ISO has been created;

Yes, 14.2RC2 has been very solid for me on my new Skylake i7-6700K + NVIdia 970M Laptop.

My only issue has been with the 'stock' firmware for my Killer 1535 Wireless Card.

I've had to overwrite the standard firmware with firmware blobs from FireWalkerX to 'talk to' the Wireless Card:

Code:

# from:  https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/MSI_GT72-6QE
#
# wget https://github.com/FireWalkerX/ath10k-firmware/blob/7e56cbb94182a2fdab110cf5bfeded8fd1d44d30/QCA6174/hw3.0/board-2.bin?raw=true /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw3.0/board.bin
# wget https://github.com/FireWalkerX/ath10k-firmware/blob/7e56cbb94182a2fdab110cf5bfeded8fd1d44d30/QCA6174/hw3.0/firmware-4.bin_WLAN.RM.2.0-00180-QCARMSWPZ-1?raw=true /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw3.0/firmware-4.bin

The Make and Model of the Laptop discussed on the page are different than mine ( a Sager NP9778-S ) but they're both Clevo-Based Systems so the instructions worked perfectly.

I am sure the Killer 1535 Wireless Hardware will be supported eventually and it's not much trouble at all to back up and replace the two firmware files.

This may explain why NetworkManager does not work for me ( but not why wicd DOES work ) but wicd has been solid for me so no worries.

I am ready for 14.2 any time.

Then once it's blessed by Pat and it's released, I'll have to decide whether to continue following current or settle into Slackware 14.2 for a nice stable 5-year ride ...

Thu Jun 30 20:26:57 UTC 2016 Slackware 14.2 x86_64 stable is released! The long development cycle (the Linux community has lately been living in "interesting times", as they say) is finally behind us, and we're proud to announce the release of Slackware 14.2. The new release brings many updates and modern tools, has switched from udev to eudev (no systemd), and adds well over a hundred new packages to the system. Thanks to the team, the upstream developers, the dedicated Slackware community, and everyone else who pitched in to help make this release a reality. The ISOs are off to be replicated, a 6 CD-ROM 32-bit set and a dual-sided 32-bit/64-bit x86/x86_64 DVD. Please consider supporting the Slackware project by picking up a copy from store.slackware.com. We're taking pre-orders now, and offer a discount if you sign up for a subscription. Have fun! :-)
EDIT: Please note that Slackware®-Links has been updated with new 14.2 information & links.

AlienBob's blog entry for Slackware 14.2 release.

Hi,

Slackware 14.2 released
Quote:

Yep

Slackware 14.2 has been released today, July 1st of 2016. Don’t fall off your chairs.
More than two and a half years have passed since the previous stable release 14.1 but the long wait was definitely worth it. Actually, the timestamp for 14.2 finalization is “Thu Jun 30 20:26:57 UTC 2016” but Pat needs time to prepare ISO images, torrent trackers, set up mirrors, write the announcement blurb etcetera… plus the team is spread over several timezones which makes it hard to pick a time to raise the glass.
This is a stellar release, go read the release announcement, and start preparing your upgrades. People whose computers have been in sync with slackware-current are in fact already running 14.2 at this moment. CD and DVD masters have been sent to the replicators and official ISOs can be expected to show up on mirrors soon.
Be sure to read the whole blog page since it does provide some useful information and insight.

Hope this helps.
Have fun & enjoy!

AlienBob's news!!

Hi,

News from Alien Pastures;
Quote:

Let's mention some more Slackware goodness. Check out the Wiki of the Slackware Documentation Project where content is being added all the time. The Wiki's virtual server had some serious stability issues last year, so it was replaced with a real-iron one with lots of CPU and bandwidth to spare. Thanks to all for the donations which allowed me to rent it for years to come. Another project that saw the light last year was Slackware Live Edition. This new approach to creating a live version for Slackware allows you to take the distro out for a test drive (in a virtual machine, or using bootable DVD or USB media) without having to install it first. Slackware Live Edition comes in several variants, containing desktop environments not found by default in Slackware: Plasma 5 (the cutting edge of KDE) and Mate (an enjoyable Gnome 2 fork). An ISO image for Slackware Live 14.2 is here: http://bear.alienbase.nl/mirrors/sla...e64-14.2-live/ .
And don't forget the SlackBuilds.org project. It contains a wealth of package build scripts for just about any software you can think of.
You too can get these notices by submitting a request at http://alien.slackbook.org/blog/slac...14-2-released/ page. Look for the subscribe entry and submit a valid email address to receive Eric's views via email.

EDIT: Slackware Live Edition Documentation is a valued site for Liveslak information/documentation

Hope this helps.
Have fun & enjoy!

I turned mine off last week when I left town but the liveslak Instance is booted, all I need to do is fire up transmission on that Box ...

I doubt we need a ton of seeders at this point, but more never hurts. I am still seeding it on my 100Mbit line and I'm only connected to 1 peer right now (overall, I've uploaded 161GB).

Thanks bassmadrigal --

I fired up qtransmission and immediately began seeding slackware64-14.2-install.iso for 2 of 7 connected peers.

slackware-14.2-install.iso and slackware-14.2-source.iso are 'quiet' for now.

I'll leave it up until I need the Appliance where the liveslak Plasma5 is plugged.

It does not hurt! I am sure that things are starting to slow down now.

My server is down for now, need to get some time to repair it.

Slackware64 Live & SlackwareLive (32bit)

Hi,

I know everyone has looked at; http://bear.alienbase.nl/mirrors/slackware-live/latest/

You need to be aware of AlienBob's Blog information for Live.
Be sure to look at SlackLive README.txt for useful information to help you along the journey of having a working copy.

Do not forget to check the hash using the ISO-versions.md5 file at http://bear.alienbase.nl/mirrors/slackware-live/latest/ so you know the downloaded ISO is valid.

Re-posting this so people will have access. I have noticed several people having some creation issues for SlackwareLive ISO.
The information is there, so use it to help yourself have a good experience.
Hope this helps.
Have fun & enjoy!

Slackware Salute to Eric aka AlienBob

Hi,

Sadly, Eric stated;
Quote:

Priorities by alienbob

I am being laid off by my employer, IBM. Jobs in the Netherlands move to lower-wage countries like Poland and India, while IBM changes course towards a "cognitive" future in which there is less interest in the traditionally skilled technical IT jobs.

Unparalleled (because forced) job cuts in the Netherlands are the result of that change of focus. Almost 10% of the IBMNL work force is sent away in a "re-balancing" operation and I am out of a job per November 1st.
On an intellectual level I understand the reasons for this. It is nothing personal and it also has nothing to do with the appreciation of my performance. I have scored among the top 5% of IBM Netherlands employees during my performance reviews of the last couple of years, which is quite decent for someone aged 55 in a technical role. Nevertheless, I am affected personally and my close circle is affected too.

This requires a shift of focus for myself. I am the sole provider of income for my family, so I will have to work hard to find a new job ASAP. For that to be successful (i.e. get a similarly paying job as my current one at IBM) I have to refresh the deep technical knowledge I once had ready at my fingertips and which has mostly gone unused while I managed a global helpdesk for one of our customers during the past several years.
I am sacrificing one of my desktop computers to an install of CentOS 7 and will spend a lot of time training for a RHCE re-certification.
As long as I still work for IBM (seven weeks), I have access to Safari Books Online where I can freely access and use the available course materials which prepare for the RHCE exam. This will of course affect the time I can spend on Slackware. I commonly spend nearly every after-work hour on packaging, scripting and assisting people online and via email. That stops now. I do not have the luxury anymore of exercising my favorite hobby this extensively and I will work toward the goal of getting (re-)certified for at least RHCE and if possible, for some of the RHCA sub-exams as well. And achieve this goal before December 1st. I really need to be re-employed by that time.

That's all I wanted to share with you for now. You'll have to ride this one out on your own for a while.
I also cannot promise that - when I have found a new job - that I will be able to provide the levels of support that you may have gotten used to. I am being drawn out of my comfort zone with no idea of the efforts a new job will require of me.

The reason for my creation of Slackware Salute to Eric aka AlienBob so the Slackware LQ forum community response can help Eric.

Hoping that thread will show how much Eric's contribution to Slackware community is appreciated.

I wish all the best for Eric and his family during the trying times to get his certs to hopefully get into a field of his choice. With Eric's skill set any company that hires him will have a well rounded individual that can aid their company therefore the companies support team would have one of the best available.

Good Luck Eric!

Have fun & enjoy the future that awaits you!
