I would give him weeks :)
No, hopefully, you find Gentoo satisfactory. I'll be glad to know if it is good. I am not as happy with my SuSE anymore - Slack ownz!!

I admit it. through the countless versions of linux i haved used since i started with linux in middle '99, i *always* come back to slack and i do tend to think it is one of the easiest distros to use.

I just did a gentoo stage 2 instal which means i downloaded and compiled the base system. i configured the kernel and rebooted...yayyy it worked. then i tried downoading and compiling X overnight. It stuffed up, turned out gentoo's portage system does all its work in /var/cache

My /var was only 500mb so you can guess what happened. I repartitioned to make var 1000mb and now im starting the tedious and slow process all over again :(

but i can tell this is one hell of a great distro already.

The only distros i would never use are redhat and debian.

CARTMAN 07-06-2002 02:33 AM

Place your bets I say he is back in max 2 weeks :D

Middle of '99 you say? HUMPH newbies ... why I remember
back in '96, not only did you have to "roll you kernel", you had to "roll you own compiler" .... "gcc" forget it, all we had was "g" to compile......................

SlCKB0Y 07-06-2002 12:45 PM

with talk like that...trust me, youd like gentoo.

pickledbeans 07-06-2002 12:50 PM

I've thought about it. But with a 28K modem it would be a long process, and the CD I've seen were make for PIII and above all I have is a lowly K6/400 :)

justa_bassplayr 11-01-2003 07:26 PM

Ive heard good things about gentoo as well, if i had a good reason to move away from slackware I would give it a try. The ports system is great. Works wonders on my other system running FREEBSD.

nakkaya 11-01-2003 08:37 PM

portege is good but the thing is compiling from source becomes a huge time consuming process after a couple of time you will be back to slack :)
