Question smbfs killing my CPU

Any idea's why, when I mount a smbfs from my windoz share and copy stuff from it to a local partition, it eats away about 55% to 65% of my CPU time? And I have a 2G processor. During the copy my machine is really unusable and it copies really slow. I am running stock slackware 8.1
