slpkg usage question: how to upgrade *installed* packages

Hi,

being new to slackware I am currently playing with the various package managers around. The candidate I am currently playing with is slpkg and as it seems, I am unable to find a way to update/upgrade the installed packages in my current installation.

When I use

% slackpkg upgrade-all

... I get a list with about 20 or 30 packages that are updateable, all from slackware64.

When I do the same with slpkg

% slpkg -c slack --upgrade

I get a much longer list, it tells me:

Total 53 packages will be upgraded and 637 will be installed.

Please beware that my lab box does not have all slackware packages installed (as suggested somewhere in order to avoid dependency issues). Instead most for the X11 related stuff has been removed, such as X11 itself, KDE, ...

Any ideas, am I missing something here?

Well, the purpose of these commands is not the same, I think, see their respective man pages to check.

To know more about slpkg, read this page if not already done. Last resort ask the author Dimitris Zlatanadis.

PS If your goal is to get acquainted with Slackware, playing with the various packages managers is not the best way, IMHO. Recommended readings:
http://docs.slackware.com/slackware:beginners_guide
http://docs.slackware.com/howtos:mis...with_slackware

well, thanks, I did read of course the man pages

And the command I am using is exactly from the page you have linked https://github.com/dslackw/slpkg#slpkg-examples

It reads:

--------CUT-------
And check if packages need upgrade with:
[...]
$ slpkg -c slack --upgrade
Reading package lists... Done

These packages need upgrading:
[...]
--------CUT-------

Sorry, I am aware of slpk but never used it, so wait for an answer from a user, or ask Dimitris

Edit /etc/slpkg/slpkg.conf file and change variable ONLY_INSTALLED to ON and try again.

Thanks, Dimitry, that helped.

Trying to understand default settings: why is this set to ONLY_INSTALLED=OFF or in other words, what scenario can break if I set it to ON? Unfortunately the comment in the file does not really explain what was so bad about it

Many times, Patrick adds packages that are useful for the proper functioning of the distribution. This option would leave out these packages and so this option is OFF by default.
