Slowing Slackware

I recently Installed Slackware 10.0 on an AMD Athlon XP 1600 with 512mb ram. Everything went very well... did the full install except KDEI and GNOME sets. I am having somethign very strange happen however.

From within KDE, every now and then the system slows to a harsh crawl. The mouse stops working. If I have a terminal open it freezes, etc etc. It's almost like my system resources are being depleted entirely. Then after about 20 seconds, sometimes less, it all goes back to normal. The system is ultra fast compared to how it normally is and it's a default install with the exception of removing the PCMCIA and ISAPNP packages as well as Mozilla and Netscape. It ain't a laptop and it don;t have any legacy ISA stuff... I don't have a clue. anyone else know what's going on?

Try opening a terminal and run "top" then press P to sort by CPU usage and M to sort by memory usage. Hopefully this will show what is using your resources.
