When I've seen a system slow on the network many times it is the nameservers set up in your /etc/resolv.conf file.
search order makes a difference.

There are easier ways:

easy method 1: in firefox/iceweasel about:config disable ipv6 and then browse. If browsing is back to normal speeds the problem is diagnosed.

easy method 2: install and use links/links2 browser, it's about the only browser out there which still doesn't use ipv6. Again browse and if speeds are back to normal the problem is diagnosed.

DNS timeouts are pretty common in ipv6 only systems (Linux) and the fail point often will be remote and beyond the user's control. Windows and Mac ipv6 capable applications use ipv4 and ipv6 concurrently which is why they don't have this issue, while ipv6 capable applications in an ipv6 enabled Linux system only use ipv6, hence the typical symptoms of slower browsing when the Linux OS is used (on a dual boot machine for example).

Double-Post?

Four or five hours ago, I attempted to post the requested information. I don't want to place a double-post, so I will refrain from responding with that same data until morning. If my post hasn't shown by then, I'll go ahead and re-post it.

You've got me wondering now...

I've been having problems with my connection recently, that I'd just put down to my ISP, but now I'm not so sure.

Like you, my web browsing has seemed a little slow, but I've also be getting intermittent bouts of heavy-total packet loss to my isps default gateway which last for somewhere in the region of a minute or so and then comes back on.

I'm now going through a process of elimination. I've taken my WRT54GS NAT router out, and connected my PC directly to my cable modem. And I've switched back to WinXP. Browsing definitely feels snappier, and so far I've not had any of those weird drop-outs, but its early days yet. If everything carries on working ok on WinXP, I'll switch back to Slack (which is normally what I use for 99% of the time) and see if the problem reoccurs. If everything works ok with slack then its probably something to do with my NAT router or cabling, or some sort of incompatibility between linux and my nat router. My router doesn't do IPV6, so that has to be a strong suspect.

It's so complicated to judge these things these days. ISP's using transparent web caches that you can't avoid anymore, my ISP is looking at that stupid Phorm stuff too, which will be doing god only knows what to my packets.

Anyway, if I find something concrete I'll be sure to drop a note in here. Ofcourse, It may turn out that its just a case of my ISP being completely pants! Time will tell.
