Slow Boot /

My system is taking almot 3 minutes longer to boot than it should. Here is a system log with the slowdowns. One thing I know is wrong is the tuner type for my Winfast 2000 card should be tuner=2 instead of 5. I have tried a few suggestions / howto's to fix this but now luck so far.

As far as the modprobe snd-* issue, I am not sure what to look for. My sound works fine.

Did you edit /etc/rc.d/rc.modules?

Hmmm. Most of that looks like ALSA stuff that it's trying to load. Maybe ALSA's configured incorrectly. I'd say post your /etc/modules.conf

Well, my modules.conf and modprobe.conf are both '0 B- empty Documents'. My sound works fine. Not sure where to go?

I did not edit rc.modules, but everything in it is # out except the following:

### Update module dependencies ###
RELEASE=`uname -r`
# If /usr is mounted and we have 'find', we can try to take a shortcut:
if [ -x /usr/bin/find -a -e /lib/modules/$RELEASE/modules.dep \
-a /lib/modules/$RELEASE/modules.dep -nt /etc/modules.conf ]; then
NEWMODS="`/usr/bin/find /lib/modules/$RELEASE -type f -newer /lib/modules/$RELEASE/modules.dep`"
# Only rebuild dependencies if new module(s) are found:
if [ ! "" = "$NEWMODS" ]; then
echo "New kernel modules have been found in /lib/modules/$RELEASE/:"
echo "$NEWMODS"
echo "Updating module dependencies for Linux $RELEASE:"
/sbin/depmod -a
else
echo "Module dependencies up to date (no new kernel modules found)."
fi
else # we don't have find, or there is no existing modules.dep, or it is out of date.
echo "Updating module dependencies for Linux $RELEASE:"
/sbin/depmod -A
fi

and

#### APM support ###
# APM is a BIOS specification for saving power using several different
# techniques. This is mostly useful for battery powered laptops.
/

and

file that we should run to load the network module:
if [ -x /etc/rc.d/rc.netdevice ]; then
. /etc/rc.d/rc.netdevice
fi

Thanks for the imput.

Have you tried running alsaconf lately? It's a long shot, but it might clear something up.

Thanks Brane (or is that Brain ). That took care of about 1.5 minutes of delay and a good portion of the errors. I still get a burst of 'snd' errors at the end but not nearly as many. I'll keep digging for the rest .

Here is the end of my syslog now:

Mar 24 21:10:10 amd kernel: SCSI device sda: 250369 512-byte hdwr sectors (128 MB)
Mar 24 21:10:10 amd kernel: sda: Write Protect is off
Mar 24 21:10:25 amd kernel: usb_control/bulk_msg: timeout

Mar 24 21:11:05 amd nmbd[1754]: [2004/03/24 21:11:05, 0] nmbd/nmbd_responserecordsdb.c:find_response_record(235)
Mar 24 21:11:05 amd nmbd[1754]: find_response_record: response packet id 20162 received with no matching record.

Mar 24 21:11:05 amd nmbd[1754]: find_response_record: response packet id 20163 received with no matching record.
Mar 24 21:11:24 amd modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-226
Mar 24 21:11:24 amd last message repeated 3 times
Mar 24 21:11:35 amd modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-slot-1
Mar 24 21:11:35 amd modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-service-1-0

Mar 24 21:11:35 amd modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-service-1-0

Thanks again!

Is this a stock kernel or did you build your own? If stock, did you install the modules? If built your own did you install the modules? Did you rerun lilo after updating the kernel? I think we need more info.

I re-compliled the original .22 kernel to add ntfs and left all others the same. I did run lilo afterwards. I also upgraded to the .24 kernel with swaret and all went fine.

My system seems to work fine, sound and all, it just has the delay on boot and I get the errors I posted from my syslog. Running alsaconf fixed a good portion of the errors. Since my sound worked fine I had not considered doing that .

A few more minor boot delays (in my previous post) and I think I will be in business.

Thanks,
