slamd64 fails to boot

Hi folks,

My slamd64-11.0 box failed to boot.

The complete story is as follows;

After running "slackpkg update" and "slackpkg upgrade-all" using "slamd64-current" mirror and working several hours the box failed to connect Internet for unknow reason. (There were no problem on the broadband checked on another PC).

Ran "shutdown -h now" to switch off the PC.

Now starting slamd64-11.0 it hung on;
Code:
Starting Sendmail MTA daemon /usr/sbin/sendmail -L -sm -mta -bd -q25m
Scrolling back on the screen following warning found;
Code:
...
Starting PCMCIA services
<probing for PCIC: edit /etc/rc.d/rc.pcmcia>
/etc/rc.d/rc.init1: line1: eth_up: command not found
/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1:line256: eth_up: command not found
..
Please advise how to fix the problem. TIA

B.R.

Can't be for sure on this, but it looks you didn't install the necessary packages to get on the internet. (I know I am genius)

Anyway, my guess is you will have to boot a liveCD (of your choice) chroot into your Slackware install and then use slackpkg to install the necessary packages from your install disk. Then unmount and reboot.

While that sounds terrible I don't think it will be that bad. You might not even have to use the install disk. If your chrooted in through a liveCD slackpkg will probably be able to get to the internet.

So now you just need to figure out what you didn't install! Hope that helped a little maybe.

Hi Penguin of Wonder,

slamd64-11.0 has been working for several days without problem. Yesterday, it was still working even after running "slackpkg update/upgrade" on "slamd64-current" mirror. For unknown reason it became unable to connect Internet while I download files on:
http://ftp.scarlet.be/pub/slamd64/sl.../huge26_smp.s/
for compiling smp-kernel.

I turned PC off to check whether it was the problem of the broadband on another PC.

Today slamd64-11.0 still can boot but unable to connect Internet. I was checking around on KDE desktop and found eth0 disppeared on "networking". I got it back, saved and exited "networking". I was still cut off from outside World unable to connect Internet. After rebooting the PC it came to present situation.

I have no idea which packages are missing.

Tks.

Hi folks,

Strangely slamd64-11.0 booted to login. I did not touch anything.

While the screen hung on:
Code:
Starting Sendmail MTA daemon /usr/sbin/sendmail -L -sm -mta -bd -q25m
I left the PC standing there and went to search for a 64 bit LiveCD for rescuing slamd64-11.0. I could not find it and came back to the PC. The screen booted to login.

Now slamd64-11.0 is working.

login and started X. Internet can be accessed.

On KDE desktop:
KStart --> Settings --> Internet & Network --> Network Settings

started "Configure - KDE Control Modules" and "Unsupported Platform-KDE Control" windows simultaneously.

On "Configure - KDE Control Modules" window, all empty entries under "Network Interfaces", "Routes", "Domain Name", "System Network" and "Profile" tags

On "Unsupported Platform-KDE Control" displaying:
Code:
Your Platform is not supported
Down on the list I can't find "slamd64-11.0". "slackware-10.0.0/10.1.0/10.2.0 were there etc.

Last time I played around here. I was not allowed to save any items of slackware-10.0.0 etc. selected. Finally it came to present situation hanging on ::
Code:
Starting Sendmail MTA daemon /usr/sbin/sendmail -L -sm -mta -bd -q25m
here.

Any advice. TIA. I have no idea whether slamd64-11.0 will start again on next boot.

# ls /var/log/
Code:
Xorg.0.log      apache/  cups/  faillog  maillog   packages/          sa/       setup/   wtmp
Xorg.0.log.old  btmp     debug  iptraf/  messages  removed_packages/  scripts/  spooler
acpid cron dmesg lastlog nfsd/ removed_scripts/ secure syslog
Pls advise which file holding the scrolling log at boot. Tks.
