Question Slamd64 do i need to format all of my partitions for it to work??

i am currently running slack 10.1 with the dflt kernel(2.4.29) i have tried to upgrade the kernel to the 2.6.12 but i thought what the hell i have an amd64 3200 and would just like to install the whole distro i have alot of time and programs running in slack that i would hate to lose by moving to slamd64... so i guess the major ? is do i have to format all of my partitions to install slamd64 or cam i somehow just upgrade to the slamd64 without losing everything??? it may be a dumb question but i just have to ask... also if anyone knows where there is a good how to on the install of slamd64 i would like to look at it. thanks for your time ppl.... oh and by the way IS IT WORTH IT? i just read some more threads on it but im confused. i love slackware i dunno if its worth the change to slamd64....

The Slamd64 Linux Project is really the best
place to go. I see you joined the forums there.

Woah, 3 in a row..
http://xushi.co.uk/guides/kernel.php

As for 64 bit, i've done some research on my laptop, and i came to the conclusion that Slamd64 is a bit unstable at the moment, but they're working on it.

But i mean i couldnt even get it to install properly... Segmentation faults even during installation.

If you want a good 64bit distro, i highly recommend Gentoo. Otherwise, stick to the 32bit Slack 10.x until Pat upgrades to 64bit (which wont happen for quite a while from what i've read)

But if you ahve a 64bit proc, might as well get everything out of it.. I got some really big performance and power push that way.

My 32-bit AMD Athlon 2600+ Barton core still kicks the pants off
every 64-bit I've seen so far...
