slacl-install-cd not booting
 

Hi,

I donwloaded Slackware-9.0 install cd and burned it into a cd. But when i tried to boot it (after checking bios settings) , instead of booting from the cd the control get over to hd.

please help.

Are there any error messages when you try to boot the CD, maybe to the tune of "No boot sector found on CD, switching to HDD"? If it does, check to make sure you just didn't burn the ISO itself to the CD. What I mean is you need to use a burning program that supports burning ISO images (Nero, Roxio, Many Many others). ISO images must be "unpacked" onto the CD, the image just can't be tossed onto it.


If there was no error like that, all I could say is to double check and triple check your BIOS settings, because Slack should boot fine from the CD. If you'd like to test farther, put another bootable CD in like Windows and try to boot from that. If that boots your problem was probably with the burning.

I have used "cdrecord" to burn the cd from ISO.

cdrecord -v dev=0,0,0 speed=4 slackware-9.iso

When I opened the CD, these contents were found slackware, isolinux, kernels, ........ slackware/(a, ap, d, ,....)

So I burned the CD correctly. I have even checked my BIOS settings. Everything is perfect. I can boot from any other bootable CDs!

But when I used VMware (PC emulator), it is perfectly booting from the CD (inside the virtual machine). Please help me

So I thought of installing through floppy.

cp bare.i > /dev/fd0

So I booted from it and pressed Enter. Now it asked for the root disk to load into ramdisk. I know that is "initrd.img" found in "isolinux" directory (size = 2.2Mb).

Suggest me a way to install slackware!

I suggest getting the install.1 and install.2 images as rootdisks.

The installation with bare.i, install.1, and install.2 (in that order) goes pretty smoothly on whatever machine I try it. After the install.2 one you get to put your Slack CD in, at which point all the nifty packages can be selected etc.

P.S.: I just thought of this, but I'm not quite sure if it actually works... try pressing the ESC button right as your computer loads (during like the very first image you see); supposedly it will give you a menu of boot locations (including, hopefully, the CDROM drive). It didn't work when I tried it, but you know... it can't hurt to try :)
