Slackware64 13.1 no smp kernel?
 
Hi,

I have downloaded several Slackware64 13.1 DVDs from several sources and found that all have the smp kernel missing somehow? Is this intentional or... ?

The regular I guess 32bit does have it though.

Since there are no known SMP broken x86_64 machines (unlike x86), all the Slackware64 kernels are SMP capable.

Anyways, no SMP is NOT disabled. How did you find out that SMP is disabled? If just by name then that's not the case.

Not that it's required but you can always recompile your kernel to meet your needs(it just sounds much work, but actually it's not) besides slackware likes a knowledgeable(or willing to learn) user.

Well it surprised me.

Almost went by unnoticed but when I was working with the boot loader I noticed it doesn't load the hugesmp.s kernel, tried to change it to to load it but than "file was missing". So after some more digging I found that it isn't even on the disk. So I wondered what happened to it.

But did I download some bad disks or is it missing? I just got them from slackware.org/getslack some UK, USA and France servers I tried. But I think all of them are missing the hugesmp.s kernel. Kinda weird though.

But if it is missing how do I recompile the kernel or add it to it?

Again, on Slackware64 the huge.s kernel _is_ an SMP kernel. So are generic.s and speakup.s.

Try "uname -a" and you will see SMP.

Also please specify in detail how you tried to load it?

He probably typed "hugesmp.s" explicitly on the commandline instead of just pressing ENTER to accept the default (huge.s)

Well, it doesn't exist at all on Slackware64 so it isn't much of a surprise that it wouldn't load there.

Ok well running "uname -a" it says Linux kernel 2.6.33.4 SMP so I guess it uses it.

So I guess the name has been changed to huge.s which includes smp?

If I load the normal 32bit DVD it will say default hugesmp.s as kernel, that is why I asked. Running the 64bit disk it will only say huge.s and not any mention of smp.

But if it loads it included in huge.s, I guess its fine.

I think you're being a little harsh. The 64-bit DVD still does reference the generic-smp and huge-smp kernels in CHANGES_AND_HINTS.TXT, for example (since the files are synchronized with 32-bit Slackware), and when I first installed 13.0 after being used to specifying -smp I noticed it as well (and probably ran `uname -a` after booting to make sure it was indeed SMP-enabled).

Definitely I don't wanna sound harsh!

After booting in the default kernel of live dvd, you can can always find that out about the kernel!
Anyways if i sound harsh then I don't intend to be.
