Slackware14.0 and Catalyst 13.4

Hello all,

I've just re-installed Slack from 13.37 (clean install of 14.0_64)
I'm trying to get Catalyst to work because I was going to give Blender a go.

Problem is once I startx (I'm running fluxbox) I can't drop back to TTY from X.
The screen goes blank and that's it. T
Trying different TTYs won't work either at this point.

I build the driver into a slack package and installed with installpkg
My radeon driver is blacklisted.
I have set nomodeset in lilo.
I have # the vga= from lilo

Does anyone have any advise where I could look further to solve this?

To make it more clear: I can get X up with startx. I can't drop to cli nor can I change to another TTY once in X.

Thank you.

Update: setting vga = 0x0323 allows me to use switch TTY 1-7

I found an error in syslog:
Code:
[fglrx:firegl_apl_loadDatabase] *ERROR* APL: apl initialize fail
Installed catalyst 12.10.
This version does work properly (as far as I can tell anyway ) and doesn't show the above message in syslog.

My suggestion: try another kernel version. I had the same problem with 3.2.45. Upgraded to 3.4.x and everything is fine.

Sorry don't have a solution but I've recently seen a similar issue on a laptop with ATI where I had to experiment with different kernels, had no problems switching to another TTY (while X was running) but got a black screen as soon as I logged out of X, the workaround was to log out from a TTY instead.

The problem persists if I switch to another TTY.

Thanks for the replies and recommendations.

It seems that the best course of action is to stick with the 12.10 version.
I have no issues with it.

@dr.s
Same issue indeed. Running X and setting vga= XXX in lilo will let me switch, but once I exit X, it's game over.
Shutting down the pc from another TTY, while X is still running, does work but seems a bit cruel to my poor little pc ;-)

@gauchao
I prefer getting a different driver to building a new kernel :-)

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I am running slackware64 too.
Can you also find this error in your syslog?

nomodeset is OK, try to add some specific vga= code suitable for your monitor, instead of just commenting it out.
and of course run lilo ;-)

OK, i should read more carefully next time, but with those two things it usually worked here.

What does it mean, game over?

It means that I can switch between TTYs while running X, but the moment I quit the X server I no longer have the ability to use any of the TTYs and the screen just stays black.

nomodeset is in lilo as is the vga = . I even tried using both the 0xXXXX and XXX numbers. All of which work fine. AND I ran lilo every time, yes . :-)
