Slackware13 and gnome - I just need the gnome games - what should I install?

I'm just doing a clean install of Slackware 13. I'm doing a clean install because I made the mistake of installing Gnome (gware) on 12.1. It screwed up my system a bit and when I tried to de-install it, I couldn't totally - there are bits and pieces of it still all over the 12.1 system.

All I want from gnome are the games, AisleRiot in particular. I managed to get the games running on 12.1 using a brute force method - letting it crash because it could not find a library, installing that library, then repeating the process until all the libraries it needed were installed.

I hope you agree that that is not a very satisfactory solution.

So what I'm asking is whether there is a really minimalist gnome package, which can correctly de-install itself - or better still - whether there is a package for the games.

I do not want to use gnome as a window-manager!

May not be of any interest to you but have you looked at PySolFC-1.1 as an alternative?

You could try GNOME SlackBuild. I have really nice experience with it, but on older Slack release (think it was 12.0, haven't tried later). Instructions are quite clear, but it would be probably enough to upgrade required packages and pull down just gnome-games package.

Yes, I've go that installed. That will be the fall back. I can't get it to fit the window correctly - that may be a window manager problem, though.

I'd rather stick with the gnome version, if I can.

The latest version is for Slackware 13.0. But I don't really want to replace standard Slackware packages, which is what it requires:
I fear that could cause problems when it comes to installing other packets. Also, I would then be in the same situation as I'm now in - a system which is no longer standard, causing problems when I want to upgrade it.

Working OK for me under Xfce.

I, too missed AisleRiot's Solitaire after switching from Gnome to Xfce. Solitaire is pretty much the only computer game I play (apart from the systems administration game)

Right now I don't like PysolFC's Solitaire as well as AisleRiot's but then I didn't like AisleRiot's as well as Microsoft's when I started playing it -- but when I played Microsoft's again I didn't like it as well as AisleRiot's! I figure we get used to things so I'll stick with PysolFC's for a while -- I might come to like it best of all!

:D Yes, you've hit the nail on the head there ! It is really just the comfort of habit and I'll get used to it. My game is pileon - I'm totally addicted.

My window manager is ratpoison which means all windows are full screen. I think I'm a bit backward in configuring gtk or something like that.

In any case, after looking at the gnome slackbuild page reminding that installing gnome will replace base slackware packages, plus their, for me, unacceptable way of installing the packages, slapt-get, when I prefer installing packages using slackbuild's (as in SBo) procedure i.e. everything under my control, I think you are definitely right - I'll switch over to PysolFC:)

...or, if you use slapt-get, add this repository http://download.salixos.org/i486/13.0/. Just stumbled over it, and it seems to work. It also resolve the deps. (Dang, I'm glad to get Gnome's Mahjong back...)

I changed the resolution of my X system to 96dpi - and now py-sol is fantastic - thanks again catkin! :)
