Slackware will not boot on MS Virtual Server 2005 R2
 

Hey all, I have been trying and trying to get Slackware 10.2 to boot on both MS Virtual Server 2005 and the R2 edition as well. The Slackware install goes fine but when reboot occurs I see the virtual session POST and then hang at a black screen before the lilo prompt appears.

Anyone else run into anything similar to this?

To me it sounds like it can't find the kernel to boot, I tried different install options (ie MBR..etc) but didnt seem to help me and yeiled the same black screen upon boot up.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

Just to add some info, I have been trying combinations of Slack 10.1 and 10.2 on Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 and Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2. (All my other virtual server sessions work on both version of VS, but then again they are Windows servers ;)

Why would you want to boot Linux inside some sort of virtual machine like this? (Don't want to modify your computer? Use a LiveCD. Want to use Slackware for the forseeable future? Install it. Running millions of virtual machines? Do it properly with one of the major linux virtualisation projects.)

Why would you think that if it didn't run it would be a Slackware problem (contact your vendor)? Slackware just uses Lilo, pretty much a standard way of booting Linux for god-knows-how-many years. If your virtual machine can't handle lilo, it won't be much good at doing most of the other stuff you'd want to do with a virtual linux machine. You certainly won't see any stability/speed/security benefits that are one of the major attractions to using any distribution of Linux.

You could try installing grub on your virtual machine but now you're just getting silly - running Slackware on a third-party bootstrap program under a virtual machine.

ledow, the answer is simple, I have one server at work, and I have to have an entire test environment setup with multiple OS's and my company has chosen to use MS VS 2005 for reasons I agree with but will not go into here.

To update this thread though yesterday before I saw your post I did decide to install the grub boot loader and install it to the MBR and my virtual machine boots beautifully now. I still do not understand why lilo would not, but oh well its booting slack and thats all I need.
