That's about how long this thread has been dormant, until today.

I am A Gnu-bie as well (In the linux world anyway), howver, i do consider myself quite knowledgeable in Windows and Dos....

now that i've said that, i just installed My very first distro on my new box (Mandrake 10) and found it to in fact be very bloated...it had too many GUI's for simple linux commands that need to be learned in the prompt, thus leaving you like a dead in headllights...i switched over to Slack-ware 10 and found that it's a better distro to truly learn linux!

so I would definitely go with the slack...oh wait, i already did

Every distribution of LINUX can be as bloated or as lean as you want. All you have to do is choose what you want when you install. Hell, I had a lean command line "only" copy of Mandrake on my machine and I've also had a bloated "everything" copy of Slackware too. Neither was better than the other. I would say, though, if you're new to Linux, but not lazy or computer-illiterate, Slackware would be easier to get going with, providing that you read the manuals. Why? Slack's online manuals are better than those of Mandrake. If you're a reader, you'd be farther ahead with Slack (of course, if you get a boxed set, most distros are on the same footing). But who reads?
